Mindfulness: The Simple Path To Serenity & Well-Being
Mindfulness, the path to serenity & wellbeing NottinghamMindfulnessGroup.co.uk
Mindfulness is a set of meditation-based practices that teach us to be more focussed in the present moment – and much less preoccupied with our indiscriminate thinking and mental rumination.

Extensive scientific research over the last 30 years has shown Mindfulness training to be highly effective at reducing stress and minimising worry, depression, anxiety and negative thinking. And it's enjoyable and deeply relaxing, too!

The Nottingham Mindfulness Group is an easy, fun and informal way to experience Mindfulness and to "give it a go". We also run workshops and formal training courses in Mindfulness, and we offer a great opportunity to meet other local people who use Mindfulness or who are interested in the subject...

"When we are Mindful and deeply in touch with the present moment, our understanding of what is is going on deepens, and we begin to be filled with acceptance, joy, peace and love"
Thích Nhất Hạnh Zen Master

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a very simple form of meditation that was little known in the West until recently. A typical meditation consists of focusing your full attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body. Focusing on each breath in this way allows you to observe your thoughts as they arise in your mind and, little by little, to let go of struggling with them. You come to realise that thoughts come and go of their own accord; that you are not your thoughts. You can watch as they appear in your mind, seemingly from thin air, and watch again as they disappear, like a soap bubble bursting. You come to the profound understanding that thoughts and feelings (including negative ones) are transient. They come and they go, and ultimately, you have a choice about whether to act on them or not.

Mindfulness is the art of being
fully focussed in the present moment,
without analysing, labelling or thinking about
your present moment experience in any way - instead,
just being completely "at one" with the moment as it unfolds.
mindfulness
noun
  1. 1.
the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
  2. 2.
a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a meditation technique and as a therapeutic practice.

The Nottingham Mindfulness Group uses Mindfulness teaching and techniques drawn from many different, respected sources (both spiritual
and therapeutic) and it is aligned to no one school, tradition or branch of Mindfulness practice. However, a key inspiration and reference
point for our activities is the teaching and work of Thích Nhất Hạnh and the Plum Village Community.

The Directors of the Nottingham Mindfulness Group are both trained and experienced Mindfulness teachers. Shaun Glossop is an experienced MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) teacher who trained under NHS supervision with the Nottingham Centre for Mindfulness. Jamie Glossop has a Post-Graduate Diploma in teaching Mindfulness and Compassion from Coventry University and he is also a professional Counsellor/Psychotherapist holding a B.A. Hons (First Class) in Humanistic Counselling from Nottingham University. He is also a member of the National Counselling Society and is listed with them as an Accredited Counsellor.

Shaun & Jamie's teaching (and the wider work of the Nottingham Mindfulness Group) is guided by the Best Practice statements of the Mindfulness Network and BAMBA (the British Association of Mindfulness-Based Approaches).

Nottingham Mindfulness Group
Meditation and Mindful Living

Nottingham Mindfulness Group is a local group for anyone interested in Mindfulness, either as a form of spiritual practice or as a practical technique for living a better, calmer, more focussed and more productive life. The group holds regular, weekly meetings which offer (in a friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere) the opportunity to learn about Mindfulness, to try-out some Mindfulness techniques and various methods of Mindfulness meditation, plus the chance to meet and get to know other people who are interested in Mindfulness, or in meditation in general.

The weekly meetings include talks by guest speakers, periods of Mindfulness meditation, film and video presentations, information about Mindfulness events, classes and courses that are happening locally, and the opportunity to get to know other members of the group in an easy, relaxed way over refreshments. All are welcome and membership is free. These meetings are casual and "open", and they provide an opportunity to encounter Mindfulness in an easy and straightforward way. Meetings take place every week in the heart of the Nottingham city centre.

Please NoteOur regular open meetings and drop-in sessions are designed to share information about Mindfulness and to offer the opportunity to experience and practice Mindful meditation. These open meetings and drop-ins are not structured to form a progressive course or formal training in Mindfulness, and they do not, in and of themselves, constitute a "Mindfulness-Based" therapy (such as MBSR or MBCT). We publish and promote full details of the formal classes and courses in Mindfulness and "Mindfulness-Based" therapies that are available in Nottingham and the wider East Midlands, including those run by ourselves and others – please ask us for a free copy of this information if it would be of interest to you.

Important - Mindfulness and other forms of meditation are safe and appropriate practices for the vast majority of people and they are proven to offer a wide range of benefits, including the lowering of stress and deep levels of relaxation. However, anyone who is currently experiencing profound psychological and emotional crisis, or who is otherwise in deep distress (including the recently bereaved), should not try meditation. (At these times it's better to seek counselling, therapy or support from a qualified professional; time spent outside in nature can also be beneficial.) In addition, recent research indicates that it may be unwise for people with bipolar vulnerability or those who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) to try any form of meditation (including Mindfulness) unless it's conducted with appropriate medical supervision. If you are currently receiving treatment for any form of mental health issue (or have received such treatment in the recent past, or have reason to believe that you might need such treatment), you should consult your doctor or psychotherapist, or another relevant health care professional, before engaging with Mindfulness or any form of meditation.
